Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Chicopee, MA

White Molar Tooth Graphic used to represent Wisdom Teeth Extractions by Chicopee Dentist, at Our Dentist. The last set of teeth to come in is your wisdom teeth. Known as the third molars, your wisdom teeth will most likely need to be extracted. Dr. Brahmbhatt will evaluate their status and make recommendations based on your situation. The team at Our Dentist will work with you to make the extraction experience as comfortable as possible.

Why do my wisdom teeth need to be extracted?

There are multiple reasons to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Some of these include:
•  Placement: Wisdom teeth have a very limited space to come in to. If the tooth is turned, angled, or twisted, they will not be able to come in correctly, which is frequently the case.
•  Impacted: Overcrowding is a common problem with wisdom teeth. In most situations your wisdom teeth do not have the space they need and can push neighboring teeth out of the way, affecting your bite and the way your teeth fit together. Impacted teeth may only partially erupt allowing access for bacteria that is then not easily cleaned away.
•  Decay: Wisdom teeth are prone to decay. Their placement deep in your mouth makes it easy to miss food particles and plaque that accumulates and causes decay. In most cases it is just not possible to take care of caries or cavities in your wisdom teeth.

Can I just choose to keep my wisdom teeth?

There are patients who request to keep their wisdom teeth as long as possible. We are happy to evaluate the current status of your wisdom teeth and advise you regularly on their progress, but Dr. Brahmbhatt will advise against waiting too long. It is important to have them removed early because your wisdom teeth can create problems for the neighboring teeth, and also, as your wisdom tooth grows, the root frequently forms a hook shape making their removal more difficult and more painful. Studies tell us that over 85% of people will end up having their wisdom teeth removed at some point, the younger the better.

When should I have my wisdom teeth extracted?

Woman with hand on cheek in pain wondering if she needs to have her wisom teeth extracted by her Chicopee Dentist, Our Dentist. The American Dental Association, along with Dr. Brahmbhatt, suggests that patients have their wisdom teeth removed in young adulthood. We like to remove your wisdom teeth when the root is about ⅔ formed. At this stage, the root is long enough to allow us to manipulate the tooth out, but not so long that the root has fully formed, creating a hook, which can be painful due to its proximity to a nerve. By your mid-twenties, there are additional factors that can increase the difficulty of the extraction process and affect the patient recovery.

Recovering from your wisdom teeth extraction

Recovering from your wisdom teeth extraction will vary on several factors including how badly the wisdom teeth were impacted and how they were erupting. Other factors such as your personal pain tolerance and age will also come into play. Dr. Brahmbhatt will go over pain relief options with you including ice packs and pain medication. He may prescribe pain medication for a couple of days following your extraction and then advise you on over the counter pain relief options.
