Dr. Brahmbhatt can reduce your stress and fears while in the dentist chair with oral sedation. This is a form of conscious sedation, meaning you remain awake, but are in a relaxed state. Oral sedation is administered orally as a pill or a liquid drink. We recommend oral sedation for our patients who are fearful of being in a dentist chair or are fearful of needles.
Oral Sedation Advantages
The advantages to taking oral sedation includes:
The most common oral sedation given is valium. Valium has a proven track record of providing ease to a patient while oral surgery is being performed. Valium may not be right for all patients, we have other options available. The most important part of making the decision on what oral sedative taken is based on your medical history.
Before Oral Sedatives are Given
Before Dr. Brahmbhatt administers an oral sedative, we ask that the patient is sure to inform him of the following:
How Do Oral Sedatives Work?
Oral sedatives work by helping patients relax. It slows the action of the patient’s central nervous system, which is why we ask that a patient who has taken an oral sedative brings a driver with them. Patients who have taken an oral sedative are awake, and they remain aware of their surroundings, but become less responsive to external stimuli including sounds, like the sound of the drill and smells, and the materials being used. Your oral sedative also reduces your sense of discomfort. Additionally, patients often feel like they are in a dreamlike state, and often report forgetting much of the time that they are there.
